SMUDGE THE SCIENTIST will introduce the general concepts
of science to 4 - 8 years olds in the classroom or at home.
It does not pretend or attempt to replace essential experimentation
but, Smudge the Scientist will ‘spark’ the imagination, re-inforce
the theory and assist when practical activities are not possible.
The package covers six areas of the curriculum - electricity
- magnetism - living processes - decay - the weather - floating
and sinking. Each topic contains a tutorial and practical
on-screen activities, using Smudge and her friend Cecily
in everyday situations, with a notepad to record observations.
n one of these activities, children need to choose the
weather conditions to make seeds grow into large sunflowers.
A combination of sun and rain works best, but choosing too
much sun, or snow would make the plants wilt away or freeze!
SMUDGE THE SCIENTIST is accompanied by three 8pp activity
books full of suggestions to extend work away from the computer,
especially in design and technology skills. It could well
form a science scheme covering several terms.
Smudge makes science FUN. The program aims to foster a
keen understanding and life-long interest in science, and
Smudge will encourage children to observe, record, present
and discuss their findings. It includes the Smudge Marks
reporting facility.
“Smudge the Scientist would prove a very
useful addition to any school’s science resources at both KS1 and KS1” Questions

about their predictions and test them out quite quickly” Child
