A street trader is having a sale and children need to use percentages or fractions to work out the new prices. A number of items are displayed in the street trader’s tray, together with a label containing the old price, and an area where children can click and type in the new price.

When this demo version is used, the same four items are used, with the same prices, and the new prices are always one half of the previous prices.

The top of the screen shows how much to reduce the prices by:
“What is 20% off of these prices” or
“What is one-half off of these prices”
At the slave level, the discount is a fraction, such as one-half, one-third or one quarter.
At the citizen level, the discount is a percentage, such as 10%, 20% or 50%.
At the senator level, the discount may be either a fraction or a percentage, and the numbers used are not always round numbers.
To enter a new price for an item, click the mouse on the item (or press Return to tab through the items) and type in the new price.
When prices for all items have been typed in, a ‘done’ icon will be shown. If you click on this icon, the program will test whether the answers are correct or not, and the number of correct and wrong answers will be recorded in the reporting information.
If all the new prices have not been typed in correctly, you will be able to try again.
There is help available in the activity introducing fractions and percentages.
