Making Mosaics

Making Mosaics involves children in using mosaics to look at reflexive symmetry, with different mosaic related activities at slave level, and at citizen and senator levels.

Differences between the demo and full version

When this demo version is used, the activity is always played at 'Slave' level, where children select the mosaics with a given number of lines of symmetry. There is only one (and not three) set of mosaics to be looked at before the reward is given.

User Guide (full version)

Slave level

A selection of mosaics are shown, and children are prompted to click on two mosaics that have no, one or two lines of symmetry.

Making Mosaics at Slave level

Children need to click on the two mosaics with the correct number of lines of symmetry before clicking on the ‘done’ icon to see if they are correct. To select a mosaic, click on it and it will be highlighted. To remove the highlight, click the mosaic again.

If your selections are correct you can move onto the next set of mosaics, otherwise, you will be prompted to try again. If you are wrong on the third try, you will be shown the correct mosaics. You need to select mosaics with the correct lines of symmetry from three sets of mosaics before the activity ends (and you receive any rewards).

Clicking on the help icon will show definitions of ‘symmetry’.

Citizen and Senator Levels

At both of these levels, a mosaic is shown with either a half or a quarter of the mosaic completed, with one or two mirrors (as the lines of symmetry), and you need to complete a symmetrical mosaic on the screen.

Making Mosaics at Citizen level

To make it easier at citizen level, there are dots in each square to indicate the colour to use, and the completed mosaic will be 8 by 8 squares. At senator level, there are no dots and the completed mosaic will be 10 by 10 squares.

To complete the mosaic, click on coloured tiles from the box on the right and drag them onto the appropriate squares on the large mosaic. When you have completed the mosaic, click on the ‘done’ icon. If the mosaic has been completed correctly, it will be recorded as correct. Otherwise, you will be prompted to try again. Children may have three tries at the mosaic.

Three mosaics need to be completed before the reward can be received.
