Geography is a key skill for early years children as
we regularly use maps to display information and to direct
us to places, and it is the starting point for learning
about the world around us. 'Early Compass and Map Skills'
program introduces children to the Early Compass and Map Skills,
with a range of interactive activities:
Points of a compass in which Smudge and Cecily explore
the 8 points of the compass.
Position and direction are four activities showing a grid
square, and objects must be placed or their locations identified
to familiarise children to the use of co-ordinates.
Map skills are five activities in which children discover
how symbols are used on maps, and how to use 4 and 6 figure
co-ordinates with a map. Map skills has exercises covering
scale and planning a route.
In Dressing Smudge, appropriate clothes for Smudge to
wear in different weather conditions need to be selected.
'Early Compass and Map Skills' is supported by a user
guide, and support notes to illustrate how the activities
may be used in the classroom and ideas for work away from
the computer. The use of position and direction also forms
part of the numeracy curriculum.
'Early Compass and Map Skills' is the first title in a
range of geography programs for children aged 4 years and
above.
