SMUDGE - COLOUR, SHAPE AND SPACE will introduce and develop
children’s awareness of shape and space - an important first
step in mathematics. As with all of Smudge’s programs this
package is friendly to use with bright, colourful screens
for working in the classroom or at home.
COLOUR SHAPE AND SPACE contains four activities to suit
a range of ages (4 - 9 years) and abilities whilst giving
it strong re-playable appeal. Children will want to discuss
their achievements using everyday language describing properties
and position of shapes while working with Smudge. This will
lead to the use of mathematical names to describe geometric
features.
SMUDGE’S PAINTBOX is an easy to use paint program which
gives children the opportunity to create their own maserpieces.
There are options for paint colours and a selection of shapes
to enlarge, reduce, move around and to shade in.
In KNOW AND PLACE children help Smudge to complete the
picture by selecting ‘missing’ shapes and placing them onto
gaps on the picture. Size, colour and position will all be
part of the decision making to complete this activity.
With SMUDGE’S SORTER, Smudge needs some help in the shape
warehouse to sort shapes - squares, circles, rectangles and
triangles (pentagons and hexagons at a higher level) - by
colour, shape, colour and shape, or by the number of sides
and corners.
DIRECTING SMUDGE will help childen with directional and
spatial awareness. Children need to guide Smudge around a
grid to her kennel. There are two options: to move Smudge
by pressing arrow keys or clicking the mouse on adjacent
squares; or by setting up a route, which Smudge can then
follow. To make the activity harder, trees can be placed
onto the grid.
The “Smudge Marks” reporting system within the program
will allow assessment of each child’s progress.
Individual activities from Smudge - Colour, Shape and
Space are available in the web browser range.
